10 Questions You Should Ask Before You Book Any Comedian for Your Event

If you are the one holding the clipboard for this year's corporate gala, holiday party, or charity fundraiser, you have a lot on your shoulders. You are trying to herd cats, manage a budget, and somehow make sure everyone actually has a good time.

When you decide to hire a comedian you are handing a live microphone to a stranger in front of your boss, your coworkers, and your clients. That is a significant leap of faith.

Over the last 20 years I have performed everywhere from top-tier comedy clubs to corporate ballrooms in Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, and across the country. I have seen phenomenal corporate shows and I have seen absolute trainwrecks that could have been avoided with a simple five-minute phone call.

Before you sign a contract or hand over a deposit to any entertainer, you need to interview them. Here are the ten questions that separate the professionals from the people who are still figuring it out.

1. Is Your Act Club Clean or Corporate Clean?

This is the single most important question on the list.

In the comedy world, clean usually just means the comedian does not use profanity. But a club clean comedian might still do 45 minutes of political material, crude dating stories, or controversial takes that fly at a late-night club and land like a lead balloon in a corporate banquet room.

What you want to hear

The comedian explicitly understands what corporate clean means. The material is universally relatable, completely HR-friendly, and appropriate for a mixed room of executives, employees, clients, and their spouses. They can describe specifically what they do and do not cover, not just tell you they are clean.

2. Do you customize your material for the company?

A cookie-cutter routine that was clearly copied and pasted from last week's gig is forgettable at best and awkward at worst.

What you want to hear

A seasoned professional will want to schedule a discovery call before the event. They should ask about your company's industry, inside references that won't embarrass anyone, topics to avoid, and the overall tone of the evening. When the audience feels like the comedian genuinely understands them, the show goes from good to genuinely memorable. That does not happen by accident.

3. What happens if our event schedule runs late?

Corporate events almost never run exactly on schedule. The CEO's remarks lasted fifteen minutes longer than expected. The catering staff is slow to clear dinner plates. The awards section takes longer than anyone planned.

What you want to hear

Flexibility without drama. A professional says no problem and asks whether you still want the full set or whether they should tighten it up to keep the evening on track. A comedian who treats schedule changes as a personal inconvenience is a comedian who has not done enough corporate events to understand that this is just Tuesday.

4. What are your technical requirements?

Some performers arrive with lengthy technical requirements that create real logistical challenges for your venue and your AV team.

What you want to hear

Simplicity and clarity. Stand-up comedy is genuinely low maintenance compared to most live entertainment. A professional needs a well-lit performance space so the audience can see their expressions, a quality PA system, and a wireless microphone. They should communicate those requirements clearly and early, and be willing to coordinate directly with your AV team before the event.

5. Have You Performed for My Specific Type of Audience Before?

A tech startup has a very different culture from an agricultural equipment manufacturer. A military base audience responds differently from a university staff appreciation luncheon. These differences matter, and a good performer knows it.

What you want to hear

Genuine versatility backed by specific examples. The comedian can describe performing for a range of industries and audience types and talk specifically about how they adjust their approach based on who is in the room. Generic claims of versatility mean less than specific examples of it.

6. Are travel and lodging included in your quote?

Nothing derails an event budget faster than surprise fees that were not part of the original conversation.

What you want to hear

Complete transparency upfront. The comedian tells you exactly whether their quote is an all-inclusive flat fee or whether travel, lodging, and other expenses will be billed separately. There should be no ambiguity about what you are paying and what you are getting. For Midwest events, booking a regional comedian directly often eliminates significant travel costs that come with flying someone in from a coastal market.

7. Will you arrive early and engage with the room?

Some performers arrive minutes before showtime, do the set, and leave immediately after. That approach works in a comedy club. In a corporate event setting it creates unnecessary tension for the event planner and misses an opportunity to build genuine rapport with the audience before the performance even starts.

What you want to hear

The comedian shows up early as a matter of standard practice. Not as a special favor. They use that time to do a sound check, walk the room, meet the event coordinator, review the run of show, and get a feel for the crowd before they ever pick up the microphone. That preparation shows up in the performance.

8. Can You Provide References From Other Event Planners?

The testimonials on a comedian's website are the floor, not the ceiling. Anyone can put three favorable quotes on a webpage.

What you want to hear

An immediate yes, followed by actual references from corporate events similar to yours. Then call those references. Ask three questions: did the performer show up prepared and professional, did the audience respond well, and would you hire them again? The third question is where the truth comes out. People are diplomatic in writing. On the phone with a direct question from a peer, they tell you what actually happened.

9. Am I Dealing Directly With You or With an Agency?

For booking household names, agencies are the only path. For booking a working professional comedian for a corporate event, a fundraiser gala, or a holiday party, a middleman adds cost and communication friction without adding value.

What you want to hear

You are dealing directly with the person who will be on your stage. When you can call or text the actual performer directly, the entire planning process becomes cleaner, faster, and more reliable. Questions get answered the same day. Last-minute changes get handled in a single conversation. And the person building your custom set is the same person you have been talking to since the first inquiry.

10. What is your cancellation and refund policy?

This question protects you financially and tells you a great deal about how professionally the performer approaches their business. A comedian who has been doing this at a corporate level for any significant amount of time has a clear, written cancellation policy. They have had to use it. They know what it says.

What you want to hear

A clear, specific, written policy that covers what happens if you need to cancel, what happens if the performer needs to cancel, what the deposit structure looks like, and what the refund terms are at various points before the event date. The policy should be part of the signed agreement, not a verbal understanding that exists only in the memory of whoever was on the phone that day.

One More thing

Asking these ten questions does not guarantee a perfect night. Nothing does. But they are an extremely effective filter that separates performers who have done this at a professional level for a long time from performers who are still figuring out what professional level means.

A comedian who answers all ten of these questions well, specifically, honestly, and without getting defensive, is a comedian worth booking. A comedian who stumbles on three or four of them is telling you something important before you have signed anything.

If you want to ask these questions of Danny Browning, the conversation starts at the contact page. The call is free. The answers are direct. And if, for any reason, Danny is not the right fit for your specific event, he will tell you that honestly rather than pitch you anyway.
